Do you need to find a home for an animal?

Your home situation may have changed, or you may have taken in a stray, but either way, you need help finding a home for a dog or cat. What do you do first? Please read our Tips for Placing an Animal.

If you are re-homing your pet for a specific reason, please visit our Rehoming Toolbox.

To help you speed up the process of finding a forever home for the animal, ART provides courtesy postings to people who will follow our suggested adoption procedures, which are listed below.

  • Have interested parties complete an adoption application to make it easier to screen potential owners.
  • Check a vet reference to make sure that all the applicant’s current animals are up to date on vaccinations and spayed or neutered. It is also a good idea to check a few more non-vet references.
  • Do a home visit. Look around the house for anything that could be hazardous to the animal. Check the yard to make sure that it is big enough for the dog and that the fence doesn’t have any holes or escape routes. Make sure you ask where the animals will be during the day and where he or she will sleep. You do not want to adopt to someone who will leave the animal outside when he or she is gone or at night. For more information, read our list of questions you should ask, and/or use our home visit checklist .
  • Never give an animal away free to a good home. An adoption fee is a commitment to the life of the animal. $50 – $100 is an acceptable fee.
  • Have the new owner read and sign an adoption agreement to ensure that the animal will be cared for properly.
Don’t forget to periodically call or visit the new owner to make sure the agreement is being carried out.

We also strongly suggest your animal be current on vaccinations (including heartworm test for dogs and FIV/Leuk test for cats) and spayed or neutered prior to being adopted. A listing of local low-cost vet clinics can be found www.spayhr.com.
