Based on continuous calls for assistance, we saw the need to help with spay\/neuter as a way to reduce shelter intake.\u00a0 ART&#8217;s Spay Hampton Roads (SpayHR) program was launched in spring 2010 and began with the Norfolk Pet Project, which provided free spay\/neuter for over 2,000 Norfolk pets from 2010-2013. Our Regional Plan&#8217;s next initiative was the Portsmouth Pet Project, during which we funded over 500 free spay\/neuter surgeries for Portsmouth pets from 2016-2018.<\/p>\n<p>Our Regional Plan is an ongoing project with the following goals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>educate the community about the number of companion animals who lose their lives in the Hampton Roads (Virginia) area each year<\/li>\n<li>promote spay\/neuter as a vital component in saving lives<\/li>\n<li>provide information about quality low-cost spay\/neuter clinics in Hampton Roads<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><strong>Recent projects under our Regional Plan<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>2024 Spay Day at IOWCAS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Partnering with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.co.isle-of-wight.va.us\/our_services\/animal_services\/index.php\">Isle of Wight County Animal Services<\/a>, we planned a community cat spay on May 14, 2024. The event was funded by a grant from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vfhs.org\/about-spayva-1\">SpayVA<\/a> (part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vfhs.org\/\">Virginia Federation of Humane Societies<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/savethemspaythemlovethem\/\">Save Them &#8211; Spay Them &#8211; Love Them<\/a>. IOWCAS officers and local residents trapped cats for the clinic. A true community effort! On clinic day, 23 cats were spayed and neutered.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2023 Community Cat Spay Day<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-511\" src=\"http:\/\/artanimals.org\/spayhr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/AllisonDr1-rotated.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artanimals.org\/spayhr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/AllisonDr1-rotated.jpeg 240w, https:\/\/artanimals.org\/spayhr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/AllisonDr1-225x300.jpeg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>On June 26, 2023 we sponsored a community cat spay day at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantvetcare.com\/\">Grant Veterinary Care<\/a>, one of our clinic partners. Additional funding was provided by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/savethemspaythemlovethem\/\">Save Them &#8211; Spay Them &#8211; Love Them<\/a>. In total, 45 cats were spayed and neutered. Quite an accomplishment for one day! It couldn&#8217;t have been possible without dedicated clinic staff, funding partners, community trappers and caretakers, and local TNR advocates like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billythekiddenrescue.org\/\">Billy the Kidden Rescue<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lilroarcatrescue.com\/\">Lil Roar Rescue<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HerdinCats\/\">Herdin&#8217; Cats<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PaxtonFelineRescue\/\">Paxton Feline Rescue<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>2021-2022 Portsmouth Pets Grant<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In November 2021, SpayHR was awarded $5,000 from the Prince William Humane Society (PWHS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hasn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Homeless Animals Support Network (HASN)<\/a> to fund a spay\/neuter project for dogs and cats in Portsmouth, Virginia.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The grant&#8217;s theme centered around the effects of COVID on veterinary care: &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The theme for this grant cycle is Spay\/Neuter! Based on feedback from rescues\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">and shelters throughout Virginia, it is apparent that access to spay and neuter\u00a0services has been greatly diminished and prices have increased due to COVID&#8221; (excerpted from grant application). We<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> selected Portsmouth as the target grant community because, unlike other cities in Hampton Roads, it does not have a permanent low-cost clinic available to the public. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our goal was to spay\/neuter approximately 35 animals at a projected cost of $150\/animal.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In total, 52 animals were spayed\/neutered under grant funding. This total includes 17 more animals than originally estimated! We&#8217;re extremely grateful to PWHS&#8217; HASN program and to our clinic partners and community members for making this project a success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2020 Chesapeake Community Cat Grant<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright  wp-image-504\" src=\"http:\/\/artanimals.org\/spayhr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/heatmap.png\" alt=\"heat map\" width=\"948\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/artanimals.org\/spayhr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/heatmap.png 948w, https:\/\/artanimals.org\/spayhr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/heatmap-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/artanimals.org\/spayhr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/heatmap-768x431.png 768w, https:\/\/artanimals.org\/spayhr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/heatmap-624x350.png 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 948px) 100vw, 948px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/artanimals.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ART<\/a> received $10,000 as part of a Rachael Ray Save Them All grant from <a href=\"https:\/\/bestfriends.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Best Friends Animal Society<\/a>. The grant provided <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">funding for spay\/neuter of community <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">cats and other assistance with TNR resources. The grant period began in February of 2020 for a one year term; <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">however, outreach and TNR activities were so successful that the funds were spent within seven months! <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Funding from the grant enabled 176 spay\/neuter surgeries for community cats in Chesapeake. Two prime goals of the grant were to reduce cat intake and increase cat live release rate at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityofchesapeake.net\/government\/city-departments\/departments\/Police-Department\/Animal-Services-Unit.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chesapeake Animal Services<\/a> (CAS). Both occurred. The original goal in the grant description was to support an at least a 66% save rate for cats at CAS. the shelter: The year-to-date save rate for cats at CAS is 74%. We are deeply grateful to CAS for assisting us by providing data that informed our work significantly. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We are also indebted to <a href=\"https:\/\/chesapeakehumane.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chesapeake Humane Society<\/a> (CHS) for providing low-cost spay\/neuter, without which the <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">project would not have been so successful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2019 Norfolk Community Cat Grant\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In mid-July 2019, SpayHR was awarded a grant by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vfhs.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia Federation of Humane Societies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bestfriends.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Best Friends Animal Society<\/a> to fund a large-scale spay\/neuter project for unowned \u201ccommunity\u201d cats in Norfolk, VA. With the assistance of our amazing volunteers and our valuable partnerships with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/norfolkspca.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Norfolk SPCA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nomorechasintails.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No More Chasin\u2019 Tails<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vbspca.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virginia Beach SPCA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/chesapeakehumane.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chesapeake Humane Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and private veterinary practices, we were able to spay\/neuter 214 cats in just over 3 months! We also partnered with local rescue and advocacy groups like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/catteam7.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat Team 7<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.feralaffairs.org\/about-us.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feral Affairs Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.billythekiddenrescue.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Billy the Kidden Rescue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/catrescueinc.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cat Rescue, Inc<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. to assist the community in TNR and provide adoption options for socialized community cats.
