Top 10 Reasons Why You Can’t Trust Pit Bulls

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

Pit bull terriers comprise a large portion of the canine companion animal population in need in our area. We couldn’t resist this cute blog entry from Dog Rescuer’s Life:

Top 10 Reasons Why You Can’t Trust Pit Bulls

10. They will steal your spot on the couch while you are up getting a soda.

9. They will take the treat you give them and bury in the backyard like a paranoid crack head hiding their stash.

8. They will jump on your bed with muddy feet. Making you do laundry…again.

December 17, 2011: Rabies Clinic

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

This past Saturday, Spay Hampton Roads sponsored a free Rabies vaccination clinic for residents of Norfolk Pet Project neighborhoods. This clinic was part of our Holiday Gift to the Community project, made possible by a grant from the ASPCA.

As with the Rabies clinic earlier this year, we hope to see participants return for spay/neuter services at future clinics.

For appointments or more information, visit our homepage.

Feliz Navidad, Gatos de Lambert’s Point

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

Earlier this year the Lambert’s Point feral cat colony got an extreme makeover in the form of a full renovation to their house.

For the season, one of their caretakers has added holiday decorations, bringing cheer to human passersby…and maybe even the feline residents.

Brrrr….so chilly this morning but so worth it!

Ziggy

Today’s clinic spayed/neutered 25 cats and dogs.

Our first arrival was Ziggy the Calico. Her human “brother” posed for a picture with her in front of the super duper PETA mobile clinic van. That’s Ron Artest with canine pal John Henry on the side of the van.

Tiger & Judo

Small dogs ruled early check in, too. Deyonta Russell brought Judo and Tiger to be neutered. We were thrilled to hear that Deyonta heard about our service through her civic league. Go Fairmont Park!

Go Monarchs, too! We saw a few Old Dominion University students with their pets. Maggy, a sweet tortie, came with one of her caretakers. There are more strays on her street, and the ODU students who care for her will work on bringing those cats for surgery and shots.

Church

Once again we were at the beautiful Ernie Morgan Center.

Early arrivals for the morning included Church and Jinx from the Ungar family, who previously brought their dog, Geisha, to a clinic. The Ungars took over care for Geisha, a Pit Bull Terrier, from a family living in military housing with a breed discrimination ban. Lucky for Geisha that the Ungars could provide a bias-free home! It’s always nice to see repeat participants, too.

We were also happy to see more participants from our newly expanded areas. Isabel, Jasmine, Diesel, and Gypsy are all dogs from Fairmont Park. From Ocean View, we saw kitties Sister Suzy and Monkey.

Nevels

The most relaxed award of the morning had to go to Nevels, a gorgeous Siamese mix. He was taken in by the McVeigh family. Nevels let the clinic staff take him out for a cuddle during check in. He didn’t seem bothered one bit by all of the dogs barking. That’s a cool cat!

Thankful Thursdays & Kennel Busters

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

Looking to adopt? Check out this video from Norfolk Perspectives to learn more about adoption specials at Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center. (The video begins at about 7:00 minutes.)

There is also a terrific discussion of the costs of caring for animals at NACC (the municipal shelter for the City of Norfolk), as well as an important reminder about spay/neuter.

Berkley update

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

Oakfield 4

Another successful TNR in Berkley. According to his caretaker, “Oakfield 4, the wide eyed little kitten in the first photo was neutered before ever having had the opportunity to contribute to the feral population!” He recovered quickly from surgery and was released back to his colony.

Unfortunately, another cat trapped in this area had had a much rougher life. With a severe inflection and no teeth, her quality of life was waning. Her caretaker made the choice to have her put down by the veterinarian, “and she passed away very quietly in a warm, dry room with lots of gentle pats.”

Oldies ARE Goodies

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

November is Adopt a Senior Pet month. Find older pets in need by searching Petfinder and refining the results by age. Or visit a local shelter and ask to see some of the older animals. Often breed specific rescue groups foster older animals, too.

If you’re looking for the maturity of a senior pet with the energy level of a youngster, there are always young and mid-aged adult cats and dogs looking for their forever families.

Find the billboard…

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

One of our volunteers noticed this billboard for the Shelter Pet Project the corner of 26th Street and Colonial Avenue.

From the Shelter Pet Project website: The Shelter Pet Project, launched in 2009, is a public service ad campaign focused on spreading the word that pets in shelters are wonderful and lovable, and encouraging potential adopters to consider the shelter as the first place to look when acquiring a “new best friend.”

Have you seen other Shelter Pet Project billboards around town? Send us a picture and the location, and we’ll post it here!
