Kitten Season

2017-07-17T16:18:11-04:00

In the warmer months, shelters see an abundance of kittens. Puppies, too, but to a much smaller degree. As clinic space allows, we open spay/neuter spots for the wonderful folks who help homeless cats through TNR and fostering.

Cody, Tom, and Jerry

A volunteer with ART brought these three cuties to be neutered at the July 9, 2010 clinic.

Cody with Tom & Jerry

Tom and Jerry are the buff (light orange) boys, and Cody is the orange and white tabby.  Interested in giving a cat or kitten a home? Please view adoptable cats on the ART adoption page.

The same volunteer brought a pregnant cat who had been dumped into the feral colony she manages.

July 9, 2010 Clinic

2017-07-17T16:18:11-04:00
Glenwood Park Civic League yard

Glenwood Park Civic League yard

For out sixth clinic, we moved to the Glenwood Park neighborhood off Hampton Boulevard.

Neighborhood dogs filled the clinic’s canine slots, but there was only a small showing for Glenwood Park cats. We know you’re out there, kitties!

While spay/neuter is important for all companion animals, it is especially important for cats, who have higher euthanasia numbers at shelters, especially during the warm months (aka “kitten season”).

Charles & Daisy

Charles Methvin filled a last minute cancellation (why cancel? it’s free!) and brought his white Shih Tzu, Angel, to be  spayed. Daisy, who is also part of Charles’ family, is already spayed but came to support Sugar on her big day.

Sugar May

Charles’ Sugar joined another Sugar at the clinic that day: Amy May brought her own Sugar to be spayed. Sugar May has another canine companion  and two bunnies at home.

Speaking of sweet treats, Andrea Menture brought her cat Fluffernutter to be neutered. Andrea does

Fluffernutter

not want him to get her other cat pregnant and plans to bring her younger cat to the next clinic to be spayed.

We’ve been very happy to see repeat “customers” for our clinics. Lindsay Harding  returned to have her dog, Levi, and cat, Sailor, neutered. She participated in our first clinic in April where she had her dog Kira spayed. Thanks for your support, Lindsay!

Eric with Boris & Luke

Eric Alibangbang brought his handsome dogs, Boris and Luke, to be neutered. He does not want them mating with other dogs.

Echoing this sentiment was Jenifer Bashum, who brought her terrier mix, Lady, to be spayed. Jennifer does not want Lady to have any puppies.

Shala

There are many benefits to spaying and neutering our companion animals. Aside from helping to reduce overpopulation (and ultimately euthanasia), we can help them live better lives. Sameerah Brown brought her gorgeous little girl, Shala, to be spayed. Sameerah said that Shala cries to much when she is in heat and she just wants her to be happier.

Thank you again to everyone who participated in the clinic!

Clinic check-in

A very full ABC van today: Just what we like to see!

7 dogs and 18 cats arrived to be spayed or neutered this morning.

Key Key

Lorrell Tanner returned this morning with her kitten Key Key, who was too small to be neutered at the June 11 clinic but was all set for today. Key Key was one of three very cute orange male tabby kittens neutered at today’s clinic.

Murphy

Key Key joined Murphy, who came with another family, on the clinic bus early in the morning.

Walter

Our very first patient of the morning was Walter, who came with Roxanne Davis. Walter was in good spirits and looked very handsome with his recent haircut.

Candi's rescued cats

Candi Castle has been assisting with a hoarding situation. She and a friend have rescued nearly all of the 18 cats residing in a very tiny house, and several of the cats from this home have benefited from our earlier clinics. Candi brought one adult cat – who has been adopted into a new, safe home! – and three kittens to today’s clinic.

Trish & Maverick

Trish Janssen brought her big black dog, Maverick, to be neutered. She learned about our clinic from Craigslist.  Maverick has already gotten his girlfriend pregnant and Trish wants him fixed so there are no more accidents.

Maverick

In addition to Maverick and his girlfriend, Trish adopted a stray dog found near her friend’s house. We are so happy to be able to help this growing family.

Teddy & family

Benita Davis read about our clinic in the Compass. She brought her dog Teddy to be neutered. She hopes that the surgery will help him to be calmer as he has started to mark his territory. She also said, “I don’t want Teddy to reproduce and cause any more animals. There are absolutely too many animals.”

Margaret Sizemore brought in her three cats and her friend’s dog, Ellie, today for surgery. She received our flier at the Glenwood Park bazaar. Margaret said that there are “many reasons to have these animals spayed and neutered.” She wants no kittens or puppies and wants all of these animals to live longer lives.

Junior

Junior, a gray and white pit, was so excited about today, he drove himself to the clinic! Actually, he was brought by his owner Denzy Johnson. Denzy lives in our targeted neighborhood and learned about our clinic through a flier. She wants Junior to be neutered and “have an extended lifespan.”

Cody

Apryl McWhirter received a clinic flier on her military housing door. She brought Cody in to be neutered.  She said that “Cody is humping and we don’t want any puppies.”

Ryo & Haru

Laura Weiler learned about our clinic through Freecycle.  Her two cats are a pair, and she and her husband do not want any kittens.  Laura said that she had been worried about the costs of getting both of their cats fixed, and when she read about our clinic she signed up!

Zechariah (previously Esther)

Our third orange tabby was brought by Kim Johnson. “Esther” turned out to be a boy, and is now Zechariah.

I'm a boy!

Kim received clinic details from a friend who had printed information from our website.  Kim said that this was her first animal and that she did not want any more animals.

Smokey

Michelle Prichard utilized our clinic for the second time by bringing her cat Smokey. At the June 11 clinic. Michelle brought her other cat Munster. Thanks for returning, Michelle!

Thanks, too, to everyone who participated today. Pet overpopulation and homelessness is a community problem, and participation in spay/neuter programs is an essential part of finding a solution.

June 11, 2010 Clinic

2017-07-17T16:18:11-04:00

Another great clinic day – 7 dogs and 14 cats spayed/neutered!

Rhianon with Baby and Edie with Princess

Edie Elings and her daughter, Rhianon Tesmer, brought their dogs Princess and Baby to be spayed this morning. Princess and Baby are mother and daughter, too.  They learned about the clinic at the Glenwood Park bazaar a few weeks ago when they saw a flier.  Edie said, “I don’t want any more litters.  It is too hard to get rid of all the puppies.”

Amanda & Dixie

Amanda Hunt brought her schnauzer Dixie to be spayed. She learned about our clinic from a friend who lives in Lincoln Military housing. She came today because, “it’s too overpopulated with animals

[in our area].”

Keena

Keena, a good looking pitbull, came with her owner Donna Harrell to be spayed.  Donna said she found out about our clinic through Craig’s List.  Keena is about 1 years old and Donna said, “There are too many animals in the pound, especially of this breed.” Donna lives in Oakdale Farms.

Valentine

Jimmy Frost brought 2 cats this morning: Valentine, who has “no love for people,” and Pompeii. He helps Fran Cook and all the cats in the area.

Baby & Oliver

Erin Harvey brought her yorkie Baby to be spayed and Oliver the dachshund mix to be neutered.  These 2 dogs live together and Erin wants “no puppies.” Erin and her husband, Mike, saw our flier and are from one of our neighborhoods–Lincoln Military housing.

Max

Deidre Myers brought her dog Max and her cat Bananas to be neutered.  She reported that she rescued Max from an abusive situation.  Max has lived with her about 4 months and now sleeps with her and her husband…taking up most of the bed space. Deidre learned about the clinic through Freecycle.  She lives in Lincoln Military housing and said that because Max is partially chow he has to be neutered—new community rules.

Bananas

She hopes that Bananas’ temperament will improve after being neutered.

Ralph Burton brought 2 feral cats from the Oakdale Farms neighborhood.  He said that his wife has already trapped and had 2 cats spayed/neutered at one of our earlier clinics.  He said that they are trying hard to trap 2 males who roam around the whole neighborhood.  Maybe for next time!

Suki

Michelle Reiner said that their cat Suki was a 2009 Christmas gift.  She reported that Suki is “driving me crazy and coming into heat.”  She learned about our clinic from her neighbor in the Ben Morrell area who had her cat attend our last clinic.

Thanks again to the great people (volunteers, citizens, clinic staff) and pets who make these clinics possible.

Once again, there was a great turnout of people and pets!

Delores Boerner brought her son’s cat named Red Red to be neutered.  She said, “Cats should not be running around.  About 3 years ago I found homes for 37 kittens and took the money I received and had the parents of the kittens fixed.  I have 3 cats and they are all fixed.”  Delores met our volunteers Jeana and Karen at the Glenwood Park civic league meeting Tuesday, May 18.

Holly Freedman brought Pismo to be neutered today.  He is a cute white shaggy-looking dog who is guilty of mounting the cat. She received one of our fliers.

Gypsy is a boxer/lab mix.  Owner Ken Bryant says that Gypsy is in heat and he wants “no puppies and does not want to fill the pound up.”  Ken rescued another dog, a terrier, in Texas and that dog is neutered.  He received our flier and also passed the flier around to his neighbors.

Kim Timmons brought her white cat with different colored eyes, Bella, to be spayed.  She said, “I don’t want kittens running around.  There are too many strays and I don’t want more strays.” She learned about our clinic on Craigslist.

Ms. Price brought her miniature pincher Gigi to be spayed.  She came today because there are, “tons and tons of dogs who reproduce and don’t have homes.”

Adrianne Harris reports, “There are too many cats, but because of these free clinics I am slowly getting one colony

[population] down.”

Krystal Balance came with her grandfather and his cat Frenchie.  She said,” My grandfather does not want kittens and there are too many cats out there.”

Tonya Feeder brought Cobbee a Yorkie to be neutered.  She said, “He is kind of crazy and is a loose wire.  I want no puppies and also want to save my house from his behavior.”

Tabatha Pacheco returns to her second clinic today with her dog Princess.  She does not want princess to have puppies as it will be “better for her and for me.”  (Tabatha brought her dog Clover to the last clinic.)

Kevin Morrow received a flier on his military housing unit.  He wants his cat Tinky to “live longer and not go into heat.”

In addition to thanking all of the people who brought their animal companions to the clinic, we want to thank a very flexible PETA clinic staff!  They took all the extra (not on the schedule) cats that arrived.  So, in total, 7 dogs and 16 cats were spayed/neutered.

At today’s clinic 7 dogs and 13 cats were spayed/neutered. How many lives were saved? Potentially thousands! (See Spay/neuter saves lives post.)

Truman & Jessica

Jessica Garza brought her small black dog Truman to be neutered because she “Doesn’t want puppies.”  She learned about the s/n clinic from Craig’s list.  She then called and also found the spayhr.org website.

Myla

Dawn Burgess brought her 8 month old dog Myla to the s/n clinic to help “keep the

[animal] population down.” She found Myla on petfinder.com and had done an internet search and learned about the clinic through our website.

Riley, Machida, King Tut & Jessica

Jessica Arrington, who lives in Monticello Village, said, “I’ve always known it’s [spay/neuter] the right thing to do.”  She brought her 3 cats, Riley, Machida, and King Tut to the clinic.  Jessica learned about our clinic through her neighborhood newsletter and also said that her vet at Owl Creek mentioned the s/n clinic. She reported that her cats “don’t go outside but that you never know.”

Cash & Diane

Cash was brought to the clinic by his owner Diane Wright.  He is about 18 months old and Diane said that, “he is a jumper and I am afraid he will go out and have some fun.”  Diane learned about the clinic from one of our fliers.  She lives about 2 blocks from today’s clinic site.

Belle & Brittany

Brittany Carter brought her 2 year old cat Belle to be spayed.  She received one of our fliers and reports that being spayed will “keep her healthy.”

Lora Hicks also received our flier.  She brought in 2 feral cats and reported that “our neighborhood is overrun with ferals.”

Clover

Tabatha and Andrew Pacheco brought in 1 year old Clover.  They learned about the clinic from Freecycle and reported that Clover “gets out a lot and we don’t have the means to provide for puppies.”

Tricia Duncan lives in the neighborhood and learned about the clinic because a flier was left on her car.  She brought Chibi who is about 2 years old.  Chibi became hers after she agreed to watch him for an acquaintance for one week, so that the original owner could visit her spouse who was stationed in Guam.  When the owner did not return after one week, Tricia and her husband called Guam and learned that the original owner did not plan on returning.  So, Chibi officially joined Tricia’s family.   Tricia said that when she was younger she volunteered at an animal shelter and knows how many animals are there.

Thank you to all of the wonderful people and pets who joined us this morning!

UPDATE: From Feral to Family

2017-07-17T16:18:11-04:00

Little Bit and Big Lou

The foster person for Little Bit, Big Lou, and Star is losing her home, and these kitties only have about a month before they must be turned into a shelter. Because they are still very shy, this is not a good option.

All three are spayed/neutered and up-to-date on their vaccinations. They would make excellent barn cats, content to keep pests away and have a safe, warm place to live in exchange. The would also be a good fit in a patient home that will accept cats who are friendly but not exactly lap cats. If you can help in any way, please please contact Fran at 757-853-0178.
