Barker

14 dogs and 9 cats were spayed/neutered at today’s clinic!

Early arrivals included Cody and Madison, adolescent cats being cared for by the Jones family, who have taken on more than their fair share of responsibility for the abandoned and otherwise homeless cats in their neighborhood. We are happy to help those you are already helping others.

Cody

The first trend for today was dogs with “B” names: Bella and Blade, Bear, Bounce, Barker, and Snoopy (aka BooBoo) all arrived for surgery. Bounce was given up by a breeder who no longer felt she was worth keeping.

Bounce

Luckily for Bounce, the Brooks (another “B” name!) family doesn’t care how much money she can make for them; they just want a loving companion.

The second trend for today was young cats – products of the 2011 kitten season.

Nibiru

Nibiru, a handsome tabby, has joined Christopher Meier in his studies at college. Nibiru is a vocal guy who comes to the sound of a bell ringing. Another young male cat, MacBeth, arrived with his family, including two young children. We think MacBeth must be experiencing more comedy than tragic drama in this busy household!

Willow

Pretty, shy Willow came to be spayed after having her own kittens. Her new family, who found her as a stray, is also keep two of her kittens, and we plan to see them soon at a clinic.

Dixie & Abby from Park Place

We were thrilled to see so many participants from our target neighborhoods. Keep spreading the word!

We were also thrilled to be asked about donations. Yes, donations are very welcome. All funding goes directly back to the animals.

TNR Project Halts Cat Overpopulation on Island

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

Just up the Chesapeake Bay, a community effort is helping hundreds of cats:

More than half of the community cat population roaming tiny Tangier Island, Virginia, was spayed or neutered during a weeklong trap/neuter/return (TNR) project in mid-May. Despite flooding that hindered trapping efforts, 250 of the island’s estimated 500 cats were spay/neutered and returned to their colonies. The project was a joint venture of Best Friends Animal Society and Operation Catnip of Gainesville, Florida. Sheltering Hands of Williston, Florida, also provided traps.

Community Cats and Neighborhood Heroes

2017-07-17T16:18:07-04:00

Berkley kittens

Those cats hanging around the neighborhood didn’t get there themselves. Friendly, semi-friendly, or feral, the cats (or their predecessors) were at some point cared for by humans. When those humans no longer care, they leave the cats as the community’s responsibility.

One of our goals is to help people who are stepping up to care for these community cats. In the Berkley neighborhood of Norfolk, Gloria S. is doing just that. Gloria contacted us for help with two adult cats and four kittens. She has been feeding them and wants to be sure they stop reproducing.

Birdy

So far, we’ve been able to trap, spay, and return two of the kittens – Birdy and Berkley. Birdy is a wild gal, and Berkley is a shy, cautious kitten. Neither is a candidate for shelter adoption, so they are being released back to Gloria’s yard.

September Events for Dogs

2017-07-17T16:18:08-04:00

Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center and Let’s Go Pet Care have been wonderful supporters of SpayHR. Friends has donated funds for clinics to pay for spay/neuter surgeries and vaccinations. Let’s Go has allowed our mobile clinics to take place in their parking lot and offered use of their store space for some clinics. Both groups are sponsoring fun events for dogs (and people) in September.

On Saturday, September 17, Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center will host the third annual Dogs Gone Swimming at the Norfolk Fitness & Wellness Center:

With the city’s pools closing for the season, the day is going to the dogs – literally! For a small admission fee, your dog/s can enjoy an “end-of-season swim” at the city’s recreation center. Join with other parents of “fur-kids” to celebrate a day where no one will say “No Dogs Allowed”! All proceeds to benefit animals at the Norfolk Animal Care Center.

Participants can register online or in person on the day of the event. Early registration is recommend, though, as spaces fill up quickly!

On the other side of town and on the following Sunday, Let’s Go Pet Care, Eggleston Services, and the Chesapeake Humane Society will host their Pool Pawty.

Get your dog(s) in on the fun for these good causes!

Sasha

Last weekend we met Tina Rathe at the Park Place Reunion. She told us about the puppy she found abandoned in the streets of her neighborhood and quickly signed up for a spay appointment. We were glad to see Tina again and meet Sasha at today’s clinic.

Reeses

We were also glad to see a repeat clinic participant: Lindsay Curran’s cat, Reeses, came today for spay surgery. Lindsay’s family found Reeses as a stray kitten and have raised her with their other cat and three dogs, one of whom, Flip, was back just to visit.

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves

2017-07-17T16:18:08-04:00

A Norfolk resident who has been working with us to control the community cat population in her neighborhood sent the following email to Mayor Fraim:

Dear Mayor Fraim:

I am writing to express my support for Spay Hampton Roads, a project
of the nonprofit Animal Rescue of Tidewater.  As recently mentioned in
The Virginian Pilot, Spay Hampton Roads offers free sterilization of
free-roaming animals and house pets in certain low-income
neighborhoods of Norfolk. The program is funded primarily through
grants and donations and uses PETA’s SNIP-Mobile, the Norfolk SPCA and
the Virginia Beach SPCA Neuter Scooter.

SpayHR has been a lifesaver for my neighborhood!  I have been living
in the Estabrook section of Norfolk for almost four years now.  Soon
after moving in, I discovered that there was a large number of feral
cats who roamed freely in the neighborhood, and they were rapidly
multiplying in number.  The first summer after I moved in, a female
feral had a litter of six kittens in the crawlspace of my house, and
after making several phone calls to different rescue agencies in the
area to find out what to do with them, it was apparent that the cat
population in Norfolk was overwhelming, and the local shelters were
filled to the brim.  I learned that the only solution to my dilemma
was to try to foster the kittens until they could be adopted, and to
try to trap the mother cat so she could be spayed and vaccinated.  I
did so, and paid out of pocket for all of the veterinary care for the
the cats.  As you can imagine, it was an expensive venture which set
me back several hundred dollars.

In the process of fostering the six kittens, I was lucky enough to be
put in contact with many other rescue agencies, foster families, and
volunteers in our area.  I was amazed to hear their stories and
discover that not only was my neighborhood overrun with feral cats,
but so were many, many other neighborhoods, not just in Norfolk, but
all over the Tidewater area.

Eventually I was put in contact with SpayHR, and I learned that they
would pay for the cats in my neighborhood to be neutered/spayed and
vaccinated.  This was wonderful news to me and to my neighbors as
well, as all of us were concerned about the cat issue, but none of us
knew where to turn.

As a result of the SpayHR initiative, at least a dozen cats from my
neighborhood have been sterilized and vaccinated in the past couple of
months alone.  Two rescued kittens are in the process of being
fostered and will eventually be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and
adopted when they are old enough.  Several kittens have already been
successfully adopted as a result of SpayHR’s help.

Now the local business owners who have been feeding this colony of
cats have been made aware of the program and are cooperating with the
trapping efforts as well.  For the first time since I moved to this
neighborhood, there is hope and help for the management of this very
large colony of cats.  Without SpayHR, these cats would continue to
reproduce, fight amongst themselves over territory and mates, and be
forced to scavenge for food as their numbers increased.  I am so
grateful and excited that this program exists, and I offer my complete
support for its continued success!

Thank you for what your office is doing to support this valuable
program, and thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

Sincerely,

S.G.

Spaying project targets problem of Norfolk’s strays

2011-08-15T00:07:11-04:00

From today’s Virginian-Pilot:

When David Downs started work at The Face Companies in Park Place, he noticed more than cars in the parking lot.

Stray cats seemed to enjoy the relative safety around the building and, over time, grew in number. Face Companies employees have fed and watered the cats for several years out of compassion, but became concerned about when kittens started showing up.
