Animal-themed T-shirts on Etsy

2012-07-15T22:02:59-04:00

Make a fashion statement for a good cause.

The cool and crafty community on Etsy includes sellers with animal-related goods who donate a portion of their sales to various charities.

For the crazy cat lady or man in your life, shop Rctees. Throughout July, they will donate $2 to Much Love Animal Rescue for every Real Men Love Cats item sold. Rctees also sells a Crazy About Cats Lady t-shirt.

Just for dogs, there’s Pittie Chicks. Designs feature a silhouetted pit bull wearing a strand of pearls or bow tie. Preppy Pitties!

How about customizing your own t-shirt? Rescue Love sells just such a thing! Ordering instructions ask for the dog breed or animal type for the silhouette. Customers can include various words, including their pets’ names, to describe their companions. Colors are customizable as well. This month, donations are being made to Chicago Pit Stop.

Norfolk SPCA: 120 Year Anniversary Adopt-A-Thon

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

Today and tomorrow (July 15) are the final two days of the Norfolk SPCA’s 120 Year Anniversary Adopt-A-Thon.

Adoption hours are extended until 7:00pm (and beginning at 11:00am).

Reduced adoption fees are $20.00 for cats (or $30.00/pair) and $40.00 for dogs. As always, animals available for adoption are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated, making the reduced adoption fees a particularly incredible value.

There are a large variety of cats and kittens needing permanent homes, so if your long-term budget will allow, consider taking advantage of the 2/$30 fee, especially for kittens. Or, consider adopting one of the longer term residents, who will be especially grateful to find her or his very own furr-ever family.

Operation Cat Snip, Inc.

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

2/10/12 Clinic

Spay Hampton Roads frequently receives requests for assistance from Hampton Roads residents residing outside the target neighborhoods that are part of the Norfolk Pet Project. Unfortunately, we cannot provide free spay/neuter for everyone, but we can refer people to the many low cost options in our area. These clinics provide very affordable spay/neuter surgeries, as well as vaccinations and other regular care (e.g., flea and tick preventatives). For residents on the other side of the tunnel seeking help with feral and free-roaming cats, there is Operation Cat Snip, Inc.

Based in Newport News, Operation Cat Snip, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) as the humane method to reduce overpopulation of feral cats on the greater peninsula. They will be the administrators for a local clinic which has recently received a PetSmart Charities Grant for TNR of feral cats in Newport News, VA.  This grant pays for surgeries and vaccinations. Caregivers should email spayneuter2012@gmail.com for additional information, to receive an appointment, or obtain a voucher for the program.

June is Adopt a Shelter Cat Month

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

We always advocate adoption, and this month local shelters offered special promotions on cat adoptions. We also know – from the people we talk to at clinics and in our target neighborhoods – that cats come to us in a wide variety of ways. Take our poll and let us know how your kitty companion came into your life.

Real men love quiche…and cats!

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

Celebrate with the cat daddy or dog father in your life by adopting a companion at one of our local shelters or an off-site weekend adoption event.

If you can’t adopt, consider a small monetary donation to help the lives of homeless animals. For example, our favorite Cat Daddy has joined The 1 Campaign through FixNation.

Or donate your time. Put your talents to good use (or develop some new ones) through a variety of volunteer opportunities. Volunteers do everything from hands on care of animals, to social media promotion, to food drives. Even if you’re allergic, you can help!

Secret Admirer

There are lots of kittens for adoption, but don’t forget the adult cats who want furr-ever homes, too. Make a good match by considering what you want from your new feline friend. Cats over 9 months of age at NACC are assessed with the ASPCA’s Feline-ality™ program. Do you want a cat who loves playtime and meeting new people? Look for a green cat. Do you prefer quiet nights and calm days? A purple kitty will prefer you. Read more about the Feline-alities™ here.

Visit the Waggin’ Tales blog for weekly compilations of adoption and other animal-related events and news.

Norfolk Pet Pantry: Updates

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

Norfolk Pet Pantry – located behind Norfolk Animal Care & Adoption Center

Friends of Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center have assisted SpayHR by sponsoring spay/neuter clinics and providing funds for vaccinations. They also host the fabulously fun Dogs Gone Swimming, which will be held later this year.

Casey

Friends of NACC directly helps residents of Southside Tidewater to keep their pets by providing free dog and cat food, cat litter, and supplies for qualifying residents. Currently, the Norfolk Pet Pantry is assisting 143 families and supporting 189 dogs and 141 cats. Please consider donating to the Pantry so that they can continue to help these people and pets in need. The Pantry is located in a small shed behind the Norfolk Animal Care and Adoption Center at 5585 Sabre Road in Norfolk.

Sammie

The Pantry is open the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. This is the best time to drop off donations. Donations can also be dropped off at the Norfolk Petco in Janaf Shopping Center, the Virginia Beach Petco on Princess Anne Road, Long’s Roullet Bookbinders on Monticello, and Muddy Paws on Hampton Boulevard. Special arrangements for large donations can be made by calling the Pet Pantry number at 955-7581.

Tuffy

Friends volunteers also use monetary donations and coupons for bulk purchases that make their funds go further. Monetary donations and coupons can be dropped off at the Pantry during open hours, mailed to Friends of Norfolk Animal Care Center, P.O. Box 11403 Norfolk, VA 23517, or made online. Groups interested in organizing a pet food drive (like the awesome young women of Girl Scout Troup 1613) can contact Friends via email or at 955-7581.

June 1, 2012 Spay/Neuter Clinic

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

Jemma

What a gorgeous day for saving lives! One of our first arrivals, a pretty Weimaraner named Jemma, amused herself in the “waiting room” (parking lot) by playing with a stick. Jemma is from one of our more recently added target areas in West Ocean View.

Bella

At the end of check in time we met Bella, who is also from the OV target area. Bella’s person actually had an appointment directly through PETA’s Mobile Clinics Division, but when we found out she was eligible to be part of our program, we added her on! Her person was able to use the money for surgery to pay for vaccinations. He told us Jemma came to his family through friends who couldn’t handle her energy. At just seven months old and being an active breed, Bella needs lots of exercise and play time.

Stranger

It’s important to consider your lifestyle when selecting a canine companion. Sometimes, of course, the the choice is made by chance.

The Charles family found their dog wandering the streets. This Stranger became a part of the family quickly, though. Another “found” dog was Sally, whom we spayed last September. Sally is a Walker Hound who was found starved and covered with ticks out in the country past Franklin. The Mauldin family saw her on the side of the road, picked her up, and gave her the only food they had in the car that morning – glazed donuts (and water). On the way back to Norfolk, the car windows remained down, as Sally was in desperate need of a bath. From 29 pounds, half dead in a ditch, to 53 pounds, safe, loved, and healthy, Sally is a lucky dog. She lives with Sasha, who was spayed at today’s clinic. Sasha came from a puppy mill or backyard breeder: The person who sold her would not let the family come to her house and made them meet her at a gas station; the breeder told the family that Sasha was three months old, but a veterinarian aged her at possibly six weeks. Sasha is also lucky to be with a family who is taking proper care of her.

Ginger

We’re always happy to see repeat and multiple use participants like the Mauldins. Puppies Jak and Lil Man are the offspring of Fat Boy, who was neutered at a non-mobile clinic because of his size. The feline/canine duo Coco and Ginger came from West Ocean View after their people received a postcard.

A couple of clinic participants asked about volunteering. Yes – Please! In addition to the volunteering opportunities available through ART and SpayHR, one of the best things target area residents can do is simply advocate spay/neuter and our free service in their neighborhoods. We understand that some residents who receive our flyers and postcards or hear about us through their civic leagues may be skeptical about using a mobile clinic. Having people in the community who have participated and can speak up for these services is a great help. If you have had your dog or cat spayed/neutered at one of our mobile clinics, please spread the good word. Contact us for flyers or more information.

Tank

Please “like” us on facebook, where you can see more pictures from today’s and previous clinics. Post an update if your dog or cat was spay/neutered, too. We’d love to hear from you.
