We usually share the good work done by the Norfolk SPCA for our community and feral cats, so now we’re sharing some dog news.

This Saturday, May 19, is the 30th Annual Norfolk SPCA Dog Walk. Join the Norfolk SPCA from 10:00-2:00 at Old Dominion University, outside Kaufman Hall. Visit their event page for more information and to register.

If running is more your speed, contact NSPCA about their Fitness with Fido campaign:
Combine fitness and charity into one activity as a member of this new group!  Cross-Country Canines is just one of many activities the Norfolk SPCA is offering this year as a part of our Fitness with Fido campaign.  Members meet every Saturday at 11:30am to run 1 to 4 miles with some of our adoptable dogs.  If you are interested in joining this group, please contact Kari Vincent at kvincent@norfolkspca.com or 622.3319 ext 110.

May 4, 2012 Spay/Neuter Clinic

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

Hello…Hello…???

Earl Grey (a target area community cat)

We’re looking for the cats and cat people in our target neighborhoods. We’re so thankful for those we do see, but we want to see (and help) more of you!

Precious

Precious is the offspring of an Ocean View cat who remains unspayed. The cat’s owner became tired of the litters of kittens she kept producing and told Ms. Cashion she was going to kill them. As is often the case, this adoption saved two lives. Having Precious helped Ms. Cashion through her mother’s death. When she saw Precious, with her white shoulders (they are hard to see in the picture but distinct in person), she knew it was a sign that Precious was meant to be with her, because her mother’s favorite fragrance had been White Shoulders.

Waldo

Also participating from OV was Waldo, a friendly English Springer Spaniel. He arrived just before Sasha, an energetic mix who decided that local residents needed a wake up call (in the form of barking). Sometimes you’re just so excited, you can’t hold it in!

Leigha

Holding clinics in the neighborhoods we serve often makes transportation a breeze for local residents. Leigha was escorted to the clinic by two caretakers on bikes. So cute!

Please visit and “like” us on facebook, where you can see more pictures from today’s and previous clinics.

Kit Kat

Woohoo to West Ocean View! After sending postcards to residents of one of our more recently added target neighborhoods, we saw some fresh faces at this morning’s clinic. Ms. Garcia found Kit Kat in her neighborhood two and a half years ago. Back then, Kit Kat could fit into her palm. Now…well, she’s not much bigger! This fluffy flirt is still kitten size.

Jax

Another pint size personality from West Ocean View at today’s clinic was Jax. His people found our postcard in their mailbox, too, and contacted us soon after. We hope to see their other dog at a future clinic.

Sara & Tegan

We also met pairs of pets from the neighborhood, including rock star kitties Sara and Tegan. They weren’t too happy to be out and about so early, but they didn’t show it and posed for this cute picture. Continuing on the music theme (it’s a reach)…When in Rome, adopt a pit bull!

Rome

Coming from West Ocean View as well was regal Rome. His person heard about us through his previous roommate, who brought Sienna and Olive to our February 24, 2012 clinic. One of our last arrivals from WOV was Domino, who sought some divine intervention in finding himself a home.

Domino

Domino was part of a litter that was abandoned when residents moved out. He showed up at the door of a local pastor, who could not keep him but found him a home with the Tatom family.

The Gift That Keeps Giving!

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

Monthly bills and monthly income – that’s what drives the economic engine at my house and I suspect yours too. It’s the same at non-profit organizations but for some reason few folks commit to regular, monthly-giving, except perhaps to churches which might do a better job of explaining the need for it. It’s hard to make spending commitments when you don’t know what will be coming in – that’s why regular monthly giving is so critical to sustaining the services we provide. Would you consider it personally? And, if you own a business, would you offer some bonus to encourage monthly givers? One of our corporate partners, the Mambo Room in Ghent is offering one free week of VIP Gold membership at the studio; now that’s a fine example of the gift that keeps on giving. Please consider becoming a monthly donor and encourage others to do the same. We and the animals we serve appreciate it immensely.

ART Partners with Rainbow Rescue to Save Dogs

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

When it comes to helping out other rescue groups in the area, Animal Rescue of Tidewater is always willing to lend a hand (or a paw!) ART often combines resources with another local animal rescue, Rainbow Rescue, which works to place dogs in permanent, loving homes in the Hampton Roads area.

“ART has stepped up to help us out when we needed assistance,” said Esther Williams who, together with her husband, started Rainbow Rescue in 2005. “We recently had a hound dog in Isle of Wight that had chemical burns. Rainbow had a foster family lined up, but we had just paid for several medical procedures for other animals and did not have the financial resources to pay for spaying the hound. ART provided the monetary assistance that we needed.” ART has worked with Rainbow Rescue in the past to seek homes for animals in need of foster homes. “It’s nice to know that the groups can call on each other,” Williams noted. “We work together and swap resources. For instance, if one group is in need of a foster home for an animal, we can pool resources to find a foster home.”

Williams explained that when she and her husband were ready to start their own animal rescue group, they attended ART meetings to see how the group operated. “One of our volunteers also volunteered with ART,” Williams said. “We went to a few ART meetings to learn about what they are doing and how they are organized as well as to network. “ART’s assistance has been such a big help for our rescue,” continued Williams. “We are in this to save animals and if even one dog gets a good life, that’s what the rescues are all about.”

Animal Volunteer Ashley Rogers

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

Name: Ashley Rogers

Volunteer Duties: Provides discounted dog training as a certified trainer through her company, Roger That Canine Training.

Location: Chesapeake

Spouse: Married to her husband, Mark.

Pets: 4 rescue pit bulls: Riley, Reme, Robin and Raja; two cats: Milo and Callie

When Did You Start Volunteering with ART?: 2011

Most Rewarding Aspect of Volunteering with ART?: The most rewarding thing for me working with ART is that I can help to keep dogs in their foster or adopted home. By working with the dogs and their families on any behavioral issues, we are able to resolve the problems that may arise and have harmony between the dogs and their people.

Love at First Facebook

2017-07-17T16:18:03-04:00

Most of us use Facebook to connect with our human friends, but Ashley Brooks used the social site to find a friend of the four-legged variety. A friend of hers posted a photo of a dog available for adoption through ART on his page. “When I saw Monroe’s picture, I really fell for him,” she said.

Monroe

Monroe, a Walker Hound mix, was found as a stray alongside the road in West Virginia. An ART member picked him up and brought him to the Hampton Roads area to live with a foster family while he waited to be adopted.

Brooks noted that she already had two welsh corgis but she just couldn’t resist Monroe when she saw his picture. “My youngest corgi and Monroe are best buddies,” she said. “All three dogs do so well together. They play and sleep together and get along beautifully.”

Monroe was placed with a foster family through ART and was a little on the skinny side. Brooks said that he is thriving in his new home and is quickly putting on weight. His nickname was “Mr. Meet and Greet” with his foster family because he was so friendly with both other animals and people.

“He’s a really happy go lucky dog,” said Brooks. “He’s the best mannered, sweetest dog I have ever seen. He’s just amazing with everyone.”
